September’s Outreach Thought: Some very unsurprising news

by Pastor Jason Taber, Pastor of Outreach

I read recently that the most popular type of group on the Meetup app (an app for people to “meet up” with others who share similar interests) is groups for mothers of young children. If you have been a young mother or been around one that won’t surprise you at all. Toddlers aren’t always very good company, so it can be an isolating and lonely time. Here’s something else one such young mother said that stuck out to me: “I can call or text someone, but what is really valuable is someone to come teach me how to put a butterfly bandage on my daughter after she cuts herself.” She was talking about the value of in-person connections and relationships; the importance of being there.

Is there a young family on your street or in your neighborhood? The evidence suggests they’re longing for supportive, in-person connections. Whether you’re several steps ahead in the parenting journey, or just one step, or even if you’ve never been a parent yourself, you almost certainly have skills to share—and more importantly you have a listening ear. How could you initiate and invest in some of those relationships. It’s simple to get started: Introduce yourself and ask how it’s going. Do a lot of listening and, as you notice needs or challenges, offer support and encouragement as you can. These families—especially moms!—are ready and looking; if you invest in the relationship
it will bear fruit!
