January's Outreach Thought:
The Being Challenge—whom can YOU invite?

by Pastor Jason Taber, Pastor of Outreach

We have been challenged to learn and grow together for 40 days as we work our way through the Being Challenge. Many congregations who have done this challenge report that it has fostered a sense of community, as well as a sense of focus in the midst of busyness.

Any of us would welcome community and focus, but Christians aren’t the only people looking for that! Community and a sense of focus are things most of our friends, neighbors, and co-workers are looking for. So, who could you invite to read along with you or even to join your small group as you grow together?

Think about people who you have spent meaningful time with, who seem to trust you, have asked questions about “church stuff,” and may have made comments that suggest they’re open to a change in their life—things like “something is missing” or “I wish I wasn’t so scattered all the time.” When you have identified someone who seems to be ready for an invitation, you could present it to them something like this: “My church is doing a 40-day challenge looking at some spiritual practices like being in community and seeking solitude. I’m really excited to have more of that in my life, and I would love for you to join in with us.”

Don’t worry about the logistics. We can help get them a book and everything they need. These 40 days will help each of us grow closer to each other and grow deeper in our relationship with God, but they can also be an opportunity for our friends and neighbors to find what they’re looking for and grow closer to Jesus, as well!
